As Mumbai landfills fill up and the air quality deteriorates, Sumer Trinity Towers residents are playing their part in reducing the burden on the environment. Waste management in Sumer has been going on for a little more than a month, and already our first batch of compost is almost ready with the second cycle also in its initial stages. There is something incredibly magical about watching nearly 1000 kgs of kitchen waste turn into rich, earthy soil, and the fact that composting biodegradable left overs has reduced the waste sent from our building to the landfill by around 70% is just an added bonus.

The process itself is fairly simple; 3 parts of wet waste + 1 part of dry leaves and sawdust in a tumbler, to be turned for aeration 3 times a day, with the occasional addition of cow dung and amrutjal for better results, faster. And the way the process was implemented, too, was a breeze. Every day the weight of the waste was measured before adding it to the tumbler and every 3 days I myself measured the temperature and pH of the compost for an indication of which stage the process was in and how much longer it would take for the compost to be completely ready. Every week a RUR representative, usually Ms. Aparna Pandey visited the site for an update on the progress, recommending changes and checking on the process. If ever there was a strange odour, or if the mixture was too acidic, an immediate change was made to bring back the compost to optimum conditions. If a gear in the tumbler slipped, that too was rectified immediately.

Additionally, we held seminars for domestic staff to train them to segregate waste at the source itself to increase efficiency. With so many people watching the process so minutely, the compost formed fairly quickly- in just two weeks the compost in most tumblers was in the cooking stage and in three weeks it had reached peak temperatures near 55 degree Celsius. Slowly but surely the foul odour turned earthy, and our compost was ready.

I have the distinct pleasure of being a part-time associate at RUR. Recently my Ma’am and mentor Ms. Monisha Narke gave me a composter for testing, a composter designed by herself. Previously I used to practice composting in bucket system, where mixing of the waste was a very tedious task. It also used to stink a lot while mixing the waste. So I was looking for a composting system that is odourless and easy to mix.

Initially I added one bowl(approx. 200gms) each soil and cow dung. Then I started adding kitchen waste. My kitchen waste contains- bread, egg shells, vegetable waste, fruit peels, steamed rice, nirmalya. I rotated the container 5 times per day, removing the extra water using drain control valve on alternate days. This wasted water can be used as a manure for the plants. To maintain moisture content I added dry leaves on alternate days. I continued adding soil and cow dung (approx. 200gms each) once in 2 weeks to speed up the process. 1st cycle of composting was completed in 50 days (approx 2 months) where I recycled 50 kg waste to 10 kg green gold bio-compost. I used my 1st cycle compost for my own plants & gifted 2nd cycle compost to my family friends on occasion of Makarsankranti. They all were very happy with this gift and excited to know the process of composting. Now I am practicing the 4th cycle of composting.

Composting of your kitchen waste at your own place is a very interesting process. I have experienced the conversion of smelly waste to compost with earthy fragrance. I am truly enjoying the recycling of my kitchen waste. Before I was introduced to composting, we used to give all our waste to BMC truck which further was thrown into a dumping ground. Now, only 30% of our waste goes to dumping ground and 70% of waste is recycled using the Green Gold Bio Composter.

India’s waste disposal system is a Dumping Ground concept. But now cities, especially metropolitan cities are facing a problem of shortage of landfill sites for waste disposal. The landfills of most of these cities are already overflowing, with no space to accommodate fresh garbage waste. As a solution to this problem, instead of constructing new landfill sites, I feel we should look into innovative methods to dispose and recycle our waste. We should deal with the waste at the source point itself.
I am glad that I have taken a step towards this concept and being a part of RUR, I am sensitizing and educating people about the same. I am sure that if everyone starts practicing waste management at their own place, we will get one step closer to cleaner, greener & healthier tomorrow.

Circular Economy is the concept that we have come across quite recently, later you will find that the concept is new but its existence is as primal as ours is. So, There exists ‘Linear Economy’ and then there is the ‘Circular Economy’.

A linear economy is when raw material is acquired by a maker and the outcome “Product” is sold to a consumer, of course, there are enough people in this simple equation at every level like Transportation, dealer, distributor, wholesaler, etc. In this economy, nothing comes back apart from profit (Monetary or otherwise) to the person involved. For eg- Raw material supplier/grower will trade against money which may be used to buy new material for the next yields, the final consumer will consume the product to gain the benefits of nutrition (if the said product was food) or comfort ( if the said product is clothing). In this transaction, nothing returns that will automatically amplify the production of raw material and thus this is identified as the linear economy.

What’s a circular economy?

Well, the raw materials are directly affected by the final product. For example, if you buy vegetables, you make sure that you or any other competent authority is composting it back so that the compost brings back the nutrition back to the soil and this helps in better yield of the next harvest.

As you notice the concept is simple and effective. The current government’s initiative on “Compost Banao Compost Apnao” is to strengthen our fellow farmers who struggle to get a good harvest and to mother earth, as there is recharge of nutrients to the soil through composting. The idea of a circle is to bring back to the same point of start and continue so that there are minimum losses and maximum interaction.

This circular economy as a concept is new but this has been practiced since eons. The trees shed leaves which then get composted naturally and add nutrients to the soil. The fish dies in the sea and their body also decays with time and provides nutrients back to the sea ecosystem which in turn is made available for fishes to nourish upon. The idea is to facilitate the idea of Closing the loop. This will surely make them a true leader with broad and deep insights into the implications of their actions.
